VOTR. Video On the Rocks, is the latest addition to the Indian online video sharing landscape. Launched by the Star TV group, this is an attempt to leverage the immense amount of video content they posses using the online medium.
Video is one of the largest growing segments in the UGM (User generated media) space globally. In India however, this segment has not taken off like it has in the west. One reason could be that Indians by nature are not very comfortable sharing their personal moments with all and sundry. Even on Youtube the world largest video sharing site, content uploaded by Indians is mostly ripped off and impersonal.
It is in this context the VOTR looks interesting. Picking up clips from Star's most popular serials and other Bollywood content available to them, it has the potential to get users coming back for more.
Related to this: The revamped Indya.com too looks good. One point to wonder about here is - How is star going to create a distinction between VOTR and the broadband version of Indya.com? Guess we will have to wait and see.
